It is that time of year that it seems that everyone is doing a Top 10 something or other. Everytime you turn on the radio or the TV there is some countdown. Everynight David Letterman has a top 10, so I thought that I would add my top 10, the top 10 stupidest (is that a word??) reasons why people come to the ER. Now this is a list that a doctor that I work with keeps and has updated with some of the patients that I have taken care of. Some of these people have stories and some of the stories I don't know, but it is still intreguing to hear what people come to the ER for.
10. Ubbilical stump falling off - not that I understand why people come in for this, but for new parents, the umbilical stump can look rather gross and after falling off there can be dried blood and whitish areas that still need drying out that can look like an infection. I know it sounds gross.
9. Fever for 2 hours in an older child - usually we give them motrin and send them home.
8. I want an ultrasound picture of my baby - this is a frequent request however they are usually only 8 weeks pregnant and don't realize that you wouldn't see anything by a beating little blob.
7. My shoes are too tight - yes we actually had someone that came in with this, actually his complaint was that his feet were hearting, but he continued to say that it was cause he thought his shoes were too tight. I don't blame the kid, I blame the parent for bringing them in the the ER for this reason.
6. My yearly check up - and she wasn't talking about a physical.
5. My nose has grown slowly over the last 2 years - yes, she was very concerned about this and other blemishes that are normal in a child going through puberty.
4. My daughter has not gone to school for 3 days - I don't really have anything to say about this.
3. Goosebumps - again, not really a lot to say.
2. Almost bitten by a dog - I think this person was upset more that his pizza was stolen and wanted the doctor's note and a free pizza.

So there you have it. The top 10 stupid reasons NOT to come to the ER. Maybe this is why there is a Healthcare problem, but that is a discussion for anothere day.

The HEAT WAVE is over!
The heat wave is over. We can barely take the dogs outside without putting on a jacket. Tonight I almost had to wear gloves. Burr...
So, this morning my roomate (A) wakes up and says that she wants to go pumpkin picking. Now, for any of those who know my roomate, knows that she despises Halloween. I on the other had LOVE halloween. I like the cute decorations, the pumpkins, the kids coming for candy, the weather, the soups, the smell of the air, and the smell of those delicious candles they make. I have 3 burning right now. Back to my roomate, so when she said this I was quite suprised, but I gladly obliged. She even carved it, and lit it tonight. So here are a couple of pics of the pumpkin.I hope it lasts untill Halloween.

Since neither A or myself have any children, we dress up our dogs. Here are pics of their previous costumes...
These were 2006, don't they look pathetic. I think they hated these costumes, maybe because it is the first time we dressed them up or they just hated the arm bracelets. The picture of Ellie (the brown dog) tells it all. Following are from 2007, they look a little happier.. We still don't know what to do for this year. Any suggestions??

Since this is a first posting to a new blog, I decided to tag myself. Hopefully as time goes on I will have more to post about random thoughts and things. So here goes nothing...
1. What was I doing 10 years ago?
WOW I had just graduated high school and returned from Venezuela visiting my friend Gaby. visiting my father and going on a trip to Lake Powell. i loved the summer after my senior year, to go back and not have any responsibilty would be great!!
2. 5 things to do today
-post my first blog
-travel home, i am at the Jersey shore with my roommate visiting her family. i love the island they live on - it has the cuttest shops.
-take the dogs for a walk, i already did it once, i have one more time before bed.
-unpack from our little get-a-way and put away laundry when i get home.
-go to bed.
3. What snacks do I enjoy? chips and salsa, candy, ice cream. anything sweet!!
4. What would I do if I were suddenly a billionaire? i don't ever see this happening, however if i were to become a billionaire i would pay off my debts, put most into savings, help my roommate buy a house and help my sister out as much as i could, and of course donate to a charity.
5. 3 bad habits- i burp outloud, but only with the people that i love! you know who you are (wink, wink). i rarely call people back who leave me messages, unless it is important, sorry. my bathroom is covered from my hair that falls out, I know it is gross, but I can only clean it so many times a week.
6. 5 jobs I've had- hostess at Mongolian BBQ in Bethesda, reception desk at a gym, nursing tech at a hospital prior to becomming a nurse, floor nurse as and RN and a director of a home care agency, worse job ever!!
7. 5 things people don't know about me
- i used to play the clairnet in school, however I was really bad at it, never practiced, and faked it during all of my performances. SHHH!
- i have 6 sisters, however I grew up mostly as an only child living with my mom, just her and i. my mom's husband had 3 children when they got married and my father and his wife had 2 and my blood-related sister lived with them.
- i don't like being alone. if someone is at home when i go to bed, and they leave without telling me goodbye or before i wake up i have a slight anxiety attack right at the half awake and half asleep point before totally waking up. then i realize that it will be ok.
I can't think of anything else. I know there has to be other stuff, but it is hard to come up with what people don't know about you when you know everything about yourself. If I think of anything I will post it.
